Maa Brahmacharini Vrat Katha

The story goes that in Her previous birth, Maa Brahmacharini was Sati, to be reborn later as Parvati, the daughter of the King of the Himalayas, Himavan. As She grew up, Sage Narada visited her advising how She could attain Lord Shiva as Her divine counterpart through intense tapasya. Following the advice, She left her royal roots and committed Herself to a life of penance deep in the forests. It is believed that for the first 1,000 years of Her penance, She lived solely on fruits and roots and for the next 100 years it was vegetables and leafy greens.; as a matter of fact, it is believed that for 3,000 years She survived solely on bilva leaves that had fallen to the ground. Impressed by Her resolve, Lord Brahma Himself blessed Her, confirming that Her divine wish would indeed be fulfilled.

Typical iconography for Maa Brahamacharini, depicts her in a simple white saree with a red water, holding a Japmala in her right hand and a Kamandalu in her left land. Maa Brahmacharini is also believed to rule the Swadhisthana Chakra.
