A person was shot during an encounter with federal immigration agents from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD) and law enforcement sources.
The shooting occurred shortly after 4 PM during an ICE enforcement operation and attempted arrest near Marble Hill Avenue, according to law enforcement sources. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots in the area.
New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani said in a statement on X that early reports indicated ICE agents had surrounded the person and a 5-year-old child inside a car before firing multiple rounds. Mamdani said officials believed the child was physically unharmed.
Calling the incident an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,” Mamdani said he had called President Donald Trump and would demand an end to all ICE enforcement actions in the city when they spoke.
“Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight,” the mayor said, adding that he was praying for the person’s recovery. He also called for ICE to leave residential neighborhoods, hospitals and streets, and reiterated his demand to abolish the agency.
The NYPD confirmed that the incident involved federal law enforcement agents but clarified that city police officers were not involved and were not at the scene when the shooting happened.
The person who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital and was conscious and receiving medical attention, the NYPD said.
