China has confirmed the arrest of Min Zin, a US citizen and well-known Myanmar political analyst, on suspicion of espionage and endangering national security. The detention was announced Friday by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, who said Min Zin had been placed under criminal detention “in accordance with the law” and that Chinese authorities had notified the US Consulate General in Guangzhou.
The arrest comes at a delicate moment for US-China relations, just weeks after President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing as both countries work to stabilize ties.
Who Is Min Zin?
Min Zin is the executive director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy (ISP) – Myanmar, a think tank that focuses on political and economic developments in Myanmar.
Before becoming a researcher and policy analyst, Min Zin was involved in Myanmar’s 1988 democracy movement as a student activist. He later studied political science at the University of California, Berkeley.
He also helped establish ISP-Myanmar, which moved its operations overseas after Myanmar’s military seized power in a 2021 coup that ousted the democratically elected government of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.
Since then, the organization has closely monitored Myanmar’s political crisis, civil war and economic challenges.
Myanmar Political Crisis Under Spotlight
The arrest is particularly noteworthy given Min Zin’s long-standing engagement with Myanmar, a country embroiled in conflict since the 2021 military takeover.
The coup triggered a prolonged civil war, which has become a core area of focus for ISP’s research and analysis.
Among its recent publications, the think tank has examined Myanmar’s political transition, including junta chief Min Aung Hlaing’s presidency following a military-engineered election, as well as the country’s struggling economy.
China has publicly backed Myanmar’s current administration, which took office after a widely criticized vote that excluded major opposition groups, including Aung San Suu Kyi’s political party.
Chinese authorities have not provided further details about the espionage allegations beyond stating that Min Zin is suspected of activities that endangered China’s national security.
