At least nine people died after a $2 million private jet crashed into a South Florida mobile home park — apparently demolishing at least one trailer in a massive fireball. Nine people were on board the Learjet 60 en route from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it crashed into a massive fireball, the FAA said.

The plane, which had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, took a sharp right turn before nosediving from 8,000 feet into the ground, BocaNewsNow reported.

The aircraft, believed to be a Learjet 60, crashed near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North shortly after 13:00 local time (17:00 GMT). The impact sparked a fire, scattered debris across the area and damaged at least one mobile home.

Reports said the aircraft struck a tree and brought down power lines before crashing. Videos and images from the scene showed flames, wreckage and extensive damage to the mobile home park.

Shocking video shows an enormous crater and fireball at the scene of the crash, with the flaming wreckage of the plane and the wreckage of a mobile home visible.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue described the incident as a “mass casualty incident”, but did not initially provide details about the number of people injured or the extent of the damage.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said all lanes of Military Trail near Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North had been closed. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Authorities are investigating the crash. Some media reports suggested the aircraft had taken off from Boca Raton, but that information has not been confirmed.

Weather conditions in the West Palm Beach area at the time included overcast skies, rain and lightning. Winds were blowing from the east at around 15mph, with gusts reaching nearly 25mph, while visibility was reported at seven miles by the National Weather Service in Miami.
