Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge raised serious concerns over the protection of voting rights in India during the INDIA bloc’s symbolic ‘public impeachment’ programme against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi.
Addressing the gathering, Kharge warned that universal adult franchise, guaranteed under Article 326 of the Indian Constitution, was facing a serious threat. “Article 326 gives universal adult franchise that is under serious threat,” he said.
Article 326 provides for elections to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies on the basis of adult suffrage, ensuring that eligible Indian citizens aged 18 and above have the right to be registered as voters, subject to constitutional and legal provisions.
