Former NFL linebacker Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36, his former club San Francisco 49ers has announced. Smith, who played for the 49ers as well as other NFL teams during his career, was one of the league’s most prominent defensive talents in the early 2010s.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been disclosed.
In a statement, the San Francisco 49ers paid tribute to the former player, expressing condolences to his family and loved ones.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith. Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen,” the club said in the statement. “Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon,” it added.
