Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Moscow is prepared for a potential war with Europe, saying any direct confrontation with NATO would leave no winners if tensions escalate further.

Speaking at a press conference during the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow on Thursday, Putin insisted that Russia did not want a conflict with European countries but was ready to respond if they pursued one.

“First of all, we are ready, but we don’t want any war with Europe. As for them, if anyone wants it, let them prepare,” Putin said.

He added that Western countries had failed to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia and warned against allowing tensions to spiral out of control.

“And if things go too far, there will be no winners at all. Let no one forget that,” he said.

Putin Warns Against Baltic Sea Blockade

Putin also said Moscow did not want a situation similar to the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz to emerge in the Baltic Sea.

His remarks followed a warning from Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, who suggested NATO could close the Baltic Sea within hours if Russia continued threatening European countries.

Tsahkna said the alliance could mobilise 50,000 experienced combat troops and use its military capabilities to restrict access to the strategic waterway.

The Baltic Sea is an important route for Russian maritime trade, with a significant share of the country’s seaborne oil exports passing through the region.

Russia Accused Of Hybrid Attacks Across Europe

Putin’s comments came amid growing concerns among European security officials about alleged Russian sabotage, cyber operations and drone activity targeting critical infrastructure.

Western intelligence officials have warned that Moscow could intensify such operations against NATO members, potentially increasing the risk of an accidental military confrontation.

Meanwhile, Russia continued its attacks on Ukraine, with overnight strikes reportedly killing 14 people after a railway station in Dnipro was hit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the United States and European countries to respond to the latest bombardment.

Despite his warnings, Putin said he supported efforts to restore relations with European countries, even as tensions between Moscow and NATO remained high.
