navratri 2026 day 9: maa siddhidatri vrat katha, puja vidhi, aarti and mantras

Sharad Navratri began on Sunday, October 11, making today, October 19, the ninth day of the festivities. Of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, the ninth day is dedicated to the worship of Maa Siddhidatri with the colour for the day being peacock green. Here is everything you need to know about this day.

Maa Siddhidatri Vrat Katha

Maa Siddhidatri’s name combines the terms ‘Siddhi’ meaning supernatural power or perfection and ‘Datri; meaning ‘giver’. The story, as stated in the Devi Purana, goes that when the universe was dark and formless it was the supreme Mahadevi who was summoned to manifest the process of creation. In fact, it was this formless version of the Goddess – or shakti – that Lord Shiva worshipped, to gain divine powers. Maa Siddhidatri is the divine force that then emerged from the left half of Mahadev. Their divine union resulted in Lord Shiva taking the form of Ardhanarishvara. Maa Siddhidatri went on to bless Lord Shiva with 18 siddhis while Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu were granted the Ashta-Siddhis – namely, anima, mahima, garima, laghima, prapti, prakamya, ishatba and vashitva, enabling them to perform their respective duties of creation and protection.

In typical iconography, Maa Siddhidatri is depicted to be seated on a fully bloomed lotus, though in some images she can be seen riding a lion. Her holy hands carry a chakra, a shankha, a mace and a lotus flower. Worshipping her is believed to help clear deep-seated vasanas or negative thoughts, granting the devotee inner wisdom bringing balance to their worldly pursuits and spiritual rooting.
