MCD Schools to Teach Honesty, Discipline, Compassion Under New Moral Education Plan

mcd schools to introduce moral education what students can expect

With the aim of ensuring that children grow up with moral values, in addition to academic learning, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning to introduce moral education into its primary schools through everyday activities such as morning assemblies, sports and children’s forums.

The civic body has reportedly constituted a five-member expert committee to recommend ways in which moral values such as honesty, discipline, compassion and social responsibility can be integrated into school education.

This panel has been told to assess the existing status of value-based education in MCD schools and then suggest activities and teaching material. These activities and teaching material can also include inspirational stories and accounts of prominent personalities. The panel has also been tasked with suggesting on ways these teaching and study material, or activities, can be inculcated in students’ daily lives.

An official told PTI that this initiative is titled ‘Education with Values — The Foundation of a Better Future’, and it seeks to complement academic learning with lessons in character and responsible citizenship.

The official further told PTI that the expert panel has been directed to submit its recommendations to MCD Education Committee chairman Yogesh Verma within a month. The proposals will then be discussed with officials before being considered for implementation.

The proposed initiative is expected to focus on incorporating value-based learning into students’ everyday school experiences rather than treating moral education as a separate academic subject. Morning assemblies, sporting activities and children’s forums could provide opportunities for students to understand and practise values such as teamwork, mutual respect, fairness and empathy.

The recommendations will serve as the basis for further discussions within the civic body before any implementation decision is taken. The proposed initiative reflects MCD’s efforts to place greater emphasis on children’s overall development alongside their academic progress.
