Supreme Court lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan, on Thursday, made a chilling claim that they are protesting against the government to change the current regime in India. Sitting alongside Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke, Bhushan said that yes, “we want to change the regime; we all want this. What’s wrong with this? The BJP has launched a movement again and again for regime change” in this country.
Attacking the BJP government for accusing the protesters that they are conspiring to topple the government, Bhushan said that regime change is a “right of every citizen, and that’s why the Supreme Court had said that the sedition law from the British era was unconstitutional.”
Accompanied by Abhijeet Dipke and actor Prakash Raj, Bhushan openly declared, “This is a fight for regime change, and we will make it happen… There will definitely be a regime change. We all want a regime change. Is there anything wrong with that?…”
Prashant Bhushan’s remarks have come as the national capital has been gripped in massive protests against the government over the SIR row, deletion of voters where the Opposition and political pressure groups including the CJP, and various student unions have raised doubts on the sanctity of elections. They all have been demanding the resignation and impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, rollback of electoral rolls to the pre-SIR status and cancellation of all elections held under Gyanesh Kumar’s as poll body chief.
Opposition parties, CJP, and various student unions have upped the ante against the Centre after an Indian Express report claimed that two election commissioners — Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi — had raised objections as many as 14 times over the course of 10 months over the SIR exercise that is being conducted to update the electoral rolls, inclusion of Form 6, and deletion of invalid voters during this entire process.
The report also raised questions that the decisions taken by the poll body were not unanimous.
However, after the Indian Express report, the Election Commission of India clarified on the controversy and released a statement along with the photo of all three top officials including CEC Gyanesh Kumar and the other two ECs sitting together, confirming that all the decisions taken by the election body were taken unanimously.
