Three police officers have been suspended in Chattogram after Bangladeshi cricket player Nayeem Hasan alleged them of assault. These are Constable Mohammad Rasel Chowdhury, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, and another policeman assigned to the police operations management unit, according to reports in the local media. Additionally, a three-person committee has been established to look into the incident.
CMP Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam On The Incident
Shawkat Ali, the commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), visited Nayeem’s home on Saturday and announced that disciplinary actions would be taken in response to the investigation’s findings. Authorities have already started an investigation into the situation, according to CMP Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam.
“It appears initially that the officers involved did not follow proper procedures during the operation. We will ensure that he [Nayeem] receives justice, and whoever is found responsible will be brought under punishment,” Amirul told The Daily Sun.
The incident happened late on Friday night as Nayeem came back to Chattogram from Dhaka. Despite not playing in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match in Savar, the off-spinner had travelled back with Prime Bank Cricket Club.
Nayeem claimed the cops stopped the CNG autorickshaw he was riding in close to Lalkhan Bazar and acted violently without giving an explanation. He claimed that before being transported to the Khulshi Police Station, he was grabbed by the throat and pushed into another autorickshaw.
Bystanders reportedly told the officers that Nayeem was an international cricket player from Bangladesh, but their intervention proved ineffective. After being freed early on Saturday morning, the 25-year-old went back to his house. When the facts of the alleged assault became public, several Bangladeshi cricket players, including Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim, reacted strongly.
The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) both condemned the incident and called for proper punishment. Tamim Iqbal, president of the BCB, also voiced support for Nayeem, stating that the board would support its players and take all necessary actions.
